Notes On Teamwork

1 Corinthians 3:9

Paul said we are “labourers together” with God.

Labourers together, according to Strong’s is the Greek word #4904 synergos which is a compound of syn and ergon.

Syn shows union, with or together.

Ergon means to toil or to work.

Synergos: labour together

Scripture uses: fellow laborer, helper, fellow helper, fellow workers, work fellow, laborer together, companion in labor. (union + work = synergy)

Our modern word synergy is derived from this same word that Paul used to say we are laborers together.

Webster defines synergy as the increased effectiveness that results when two or more people or businesses work together.

Synergy is the creation of a whole that is greater than the simple sum of its parts.  (Wikipedia)

Teams are effective because the combined action of many is greater than the sum of each one acting separately.

Antagonism is the opposite of synergism. When the combined effects of two factors is smaller than the effect of any one of them due to resistance between the two.

We are far more productive when we are workers together.

If we gather in His name, He will be in the midst. (synergy)

Paul said we are “labourers together” with God.

synergy (n.)

1650s, "cooperation," from Modern Latin synergia, from Greek synergia "joint work, a working together, cooperation; assistance, help," from synergos "working together," related to synergein "work together, help another in work," from syn-"together" (see syn-) + ergon "work" (see organ). Meaning "combined activities of a group" is from 1847; sense of "advanced effectiveness as a result of cooperation" is from 1957

Following this line of thought:

Matthew 18:19-20 (KJV)

Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

For where two or three are gathered together (synago) in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (KJV)

And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Episynagōgē: same word is used for assembling and together. (epi-synagoge)

We are energized by the actions of others. (faith is imparted, spirit uplifted)

Moses told Joshua to choose men to fight Amalek.

You go fight, I’m going to stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand. Aaron and Hur went with Moses, held up his hands and the battle was won. The battle was won because (God was with them) each person fulfilled their role on the team.

How would you determine the level of importance of each member?

They were effective as long as each member filled their role.

When Eve acted on her own, the team suffered.

Decisions made in the framework (team) of Godly counsel, with the benefit of time and thought, prove to be the most solid and sound.

1 Corinthians 12

We are one body, many members!!

24: God has tempered the body together (mixed or blended)

25: That there should be no schism (Division) in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

When we are divided we fail in the purpose and mission of the team.  We lose our synergy.

    > Won’t give up personal agenda or ego (my way)

    > Unwilling to change (this is the only way)

    > Negative attitudes (there is no way)

    > Territorial (protecting my way)

    > Choosing the role over the goal (my position)

Only when we allow ourselves (talents, skills, time…) to blend with other team members do we become one body.

Now you are a part of something bigger than yourself.

Here we lose our self-focus. We give up our personal agenda and focus on the mission of the team. (Once that decision is made)

     * often circumstances determine the mission

     * other times it is the vision presented by the leader

     * it can result from the collaborative effort of the team

Purpose: to accomplish mission/s greater than one alone can accomplish.

Scripture reference: a threefold cord is not quickly broken

The bigger picture drives your actions

Each team member must understand the mission and objectives of the organization before they will buy in.

Teamwork divides the task and multiplies the success.  (Zig Ziglar)

There is a huge difference between working NEAR someone and working WITH someone.

Terms : group, crowd, company and together may suggest more than one, it doesn’t always compute to teamwork.

We must create an environment that is conducive to teamwork.

As the challenge escalates the need for teamwork elevates.  (John Maxwell)

The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime.  ( Babe Ruth)
